Updated: Dec 12, 2021

If you've made it this far, you're probably interested in Esports. But perhaps you're wondering, what really is it? We're here to help. This post will get you from A to B and every level in between as we outline the basics of Esports.

To summarize, Esports is the organized competition of multiplayer professional video gamers. These can be held online or in person, and sometimes, even hosted in dedicated arenas.

“As a relatively new industry, Esports is dynamic by nature and adapts as new games rise in popularity.”

The matches within Esports can be categorized into different categories. The most popular of these include:

MOBA: Multiplayer Online Battle Arena

FPS: First Person Shooter

RTS: Real Time Strategy

Esports games can range greatly in genre. The most popular franchises include League of Legend's, DOTA, Counter-Strike, Super Smash Bros, and many more. As a relatively new industry, Esports is dynamic by nature and adapts as new games rise in popularity. For example, as Fortnite took the video game world by storm during the pandemic, a Fortnite annual World Cup was introduced.

While Esports is present around the world, it is currently most popular in China and South Korea with the USA climbing quickly ahead. Although Japan has had great success in the video gaming industry, Esports has not fully taken off in the country due to government restrictions. Worldwide, Esports is growing steadily, bringing in 1 billion dollars in 2020 alone.
